Jonny nods.

Jonny: I came here — try the new world, less ghosts.

Jonny glances at Sophie, then looks away and smiles to himself bitterly. Then he drinks the tea down straight and stands. To stop him from leaving:

Sophie: You . . . ? Do you have family? Any family?

Jonny nods.

Jonny: I told my ma I wanted to go work the pit: it was in a low place, under the ocean, and she said “no.” I said, “You can’t say ‘no,’ I’m my own man.”

Sophie: How old were you?

Jonny: Fourteen.

They both smile.
